The Edmonton Oilers made a splash today by signing a college free agent in defenceman Damien Carfagna from Ohio State University, and it seems to be an interesting pickup from the Oilers.
Who is Oilers newest prospect Damien Carfagna?
According to Oilers prospect expert Bruce Curlock, Carfagna's standout trait is his incredible skating - both his edges and stride, as well as his speed. He's also confident carrying the puck up the ice, and is an exceptional passer.
Now 22 years old, Carfagna had a breakout season with Ohio State University this year. Ohio State wasn't ranked as one of the best teams, but he still put up 7 goals and 28 points in 38 games this season - with a +16 rating.
Curlock and other analysts have noted that with Ohio State, Carfagna played a massive role on their blue line. The one concern is his smaller stature, but his success this season may dispel those concerns.
His hockey sense has been greatly praised as one of his best assets, and that's a skill that will play perfectly with the Edmonton Oilers' elite offence.
As a 22 year old playing in the NCAA for the last three seasons, it's very possible that Carfagna pushes for a roster spot as soon as next season.
Hopefully the Oilers found a hidden gem with the signing of Carfagna. The team has very rarely ever signed college free agents, so this signing may be the beginning of a new direction and era for the Edmonton Oilers.
