Penguins place 700+ game NHL veteran on waivers after goalie trade with Oilers
In the wake of acquiring Stuart Skinner and Brett Kulak, the Pittsburgh Penguins will be placing Matt Dumba on waivers as a corresponding roster move.
Brett Kulak looks to make an impact in the East
The former Edmonton defenseman was an important piece on the blueline for the last four-plus years, in particular the last two playoff runs, where he helped the Oilers reach the Finals each time.
Now, he will help Pittsburgh in their own run to the post-season. Unfortunately, his arrival in Pittsburgh means Matt Dumba is the odd man out.
In 11 games with the Pens this year, Matt has recorded 1G and 2A, with a TOI of 14:56, approximately four minutes less than when he was in his prime.
Largely deployed on the third pairing, Dumba has been a healthy scratch for 18 games this season.
Reports suggest that Dumba will likely be headed for the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton if he clears waivers.
Now designated a 'non-roster player', Dumba will be unavailable to play. As a non-roster player, he will not count against Pittsburgh's 23-man active roster limit, and allows the team to call up another player as a replacement.
New D-man for Pens steady defensively
Brett Kulak can help the Penguins as a steady, veteran defensive depth option who brings strong skating and significant playoff experience to the blueline.
Kulak is also effective at breaking up cycles and moving the puck. Coaches value his consistency and the low maintenance approach he brings to the rink every day.
