On a recent edition of Sportsnet, Insider Elliotte Friedman commented on why he believes a deal for Pittsburgh's goalie Tristan Jarry is likely a nonstarter.

There's been a lot of noise around Tristan Jarry in the last 24 to 48 hours...I do think there's legitimate Edmonton interest in Jarry, but I think it is extremely complicated and might not be possible, mainly because Pittsburgh has indicated it will not retain (salary). He's got two more years at $5.375 million, and the Penguins are not willing to retain...it might not be possible, because Edmonton would have to do some roster surgery to get it done.

Oilers' cap-restrictions hindering possible trades

The biggest obstacle to a trade for Edmonton is its salary cap. For Stan Bowman to pull-off a deal, he'd have to trade away a roster player to make cap-room, and that is the complicated part.
So, where the Penguins are concerned, the only way Edmonton makes a deal for Tristan Jarry is if the former retains some of his salary. If Pittsburgh retained 50% for the next 2.5 years, they'd have to pay about $7M.
The Penguins, according to PuckPedia are well below the NHL's $95.5M salary cap at $86.3M, and could very well absorb any salary retention.
Yet, according to the Edmonton Journal, it's been rumoured that Penguins' owners Fenway Sports Group are attempting to sell the franchise and may not be too eager to part with an additional $7M from its balance sheet.
It's unfortunate that non-hockey factors affect trade-negotiations, but this is the reality of professional sports, where the business-end often supersedes what happens on the ice.
Another potential obstacle to a trade for Jarry is that for the Pens to even consider retaining 50% of his salary, Edmonton would need to up-the-ante with a solid prospect and/or a first-round pick, which for the Oilers, are scarce.
Oilers may not be willing to lose some of its future for an uncertain outcome. If they keep playing well, they won't have to.
