Oilers revealed to have offer on the table to acquire Mikko Rantanen at trade deadline

Former NHL general manager an NHL analyst Brian Lawton revealed that the Edmonton Oilers were very aggressive to acquire Mikko Rantanen.
Unfortunately, the Oilers fell short as the Dallas Stars acquired the superstar from the Carolina Hurricanes in exchange for Logan Stankoven and four draft picks.
Oilers were attempting to be bold with Rantanen offer
Acquiring Rantanen would have taken the Oilers to the next level as the two-time 100 point plus player would have been alongside either Connor McDavid or Leon Draisaitl.
Lawton had not revealed what was offered to the Hurricanes as the cost would have been extremely high.
The Oilers would have had some draft capital as they were able to keep the bulk of their picks and prospects after making their deal with the San Jose Sharks yesterday.
Pressure had been mounting on general manager Stan Bowman to make some moves for the Oilers as many of their rivals continued an arms race of players.
Rantanen saga is over with contact extension
The Oilers will not have their chance to sign Rantanen in the summer as he had decided to sign an 8-year deal with the Stars for $96 million.
This puts his cap hit at $12 million per season which was below what Nathan MacKinnon is making and would have put rantin and inline with what the avalanche were willing to pay.
No matter the case, there will be many unrestricted free agents come the summer where the Oilers will be able to upgrade their team while removing some players as they come off from their deals.
With the trade deadline now over and it appears the Oilers completed their moves, the team will now focus on the stretch run of the season and prepare themselves for the playoffs.
Hopefully, the team will turn its fortunes around as it has lost its last six of seven games.
