The Edmonton Oilers were in dire straits after the second period of last night's game against Columbus, and were booed off the ice at the end of the second period.

It was the culmination of the early season struggles for the Edmonton Oilers, who had just lost a brutal 9-1 game to Colorado. On the ropes against a weaker Blue Jackets team, Oilers fans had had enough and started laying on the boos.

Oilers' Jake Walman responds to fans booing the team off the ice

It has to be a low point for the team for the faithful fans of Oil Country to start laying out the boos - but the team deserved it for their play. Even the players understand that, and it could serve as a wake up call.
Defenceman Jake Walman said he understood the reasons behind the boos, and still stood by the fans.
"(Fans) deserve to boo. It's not a cheap ticket. And these fans love this team. We love the fans. We're trying to do as much as we can, but we (weren't) performing out there.

So we're trying our hardest. We know it's a hard-working city, and that's what we need to do."

And to the Oilers credit, they turned those jeers into cheers in the third period. It was far from a good effort, but the Oilers found the lucky bounce needed to tie the game, and their skill won it in overtime.
This is mostly a veteran group of Oilers who can weather the intense ups and downs of a season. There must have been a moment late in the game where the leadership group rallied the troops - if they weren't already inspired by McDavid's performance.
Perhaps this win can be the turning point for the Oilers this season, taking them away from their mediocre record and propelled into a win streak on the upcoming 7-game road trip.
