The Edmonton Oilers have been reported to be exploring upgrades to their 4th line center position for the playoffs, and one insider is shutting down the possibility of Toews being the solution this season.

Jonathan Toews recently signalled that he's pursuing an NHL comeback, with the Edmonton Oilers being named one of the more likely landing spots.

The Oilers were connected to Toews out of their need for a fourth line center and his connection with former GM Stan Bowman, and although they still could be a fit, insider Daniel Nugent-Bowman said in the Athletic it won't happen this season.

The Oilers are a natural team for Toews to be linked to considering Bowman was his longtime GM in Chicago. However, the possibility of the Oilers signing Toews before the trade deadline is a long shot at this point considering the three-time Stanley Cup champion hasn't resumed skating. Right now, he appears to be more of a player to watch for training camp.

Unlike John Klingberg, Toews hasn't been skating at all yet this season. If there is a time he joins the Oilers, it will be in the offseason.

Now 36 years old, Toews is attempting an NHL comeback after missing two full seasons with a medical condition, chronic immune response syndrome.

He's played 1036 career games and scored 883 points with the Blackhawks, also winning three Stanley cups.

Oilers looking to solidify 4th line position before trade deadline

Toews could potentially be a good option next season if he can prove he's back up to speed. His savvy defensive game, leadership, and hockey sense will still be valuable additions - but Edmonton needs help this season.

For now, the Oilers will give Noah Philp a chance to run with the 4th line center job for the playoffs. However, according to Nugent-Bowman, Edmonton could still pivot to another bottom six option if Philp doesn't look ready.

Instead, if the Oilers feel like they need to add another depth pivot, it's players like Nick Bjugstad and Jake Evans - players they've either acquired or had interest in before - that are among those to watch.

Hopefully the local kid in Noah Philp can prove himself before the deadline and save the Oilers some trade assets. Next year though, Edmonton may still have another interesting option in Jonathan Toews.
