Oilers fans ticked off by Dylan Holloway's comments on leaving Edmonton
Oilers forward Dylan Holloway left the team on an offer sheet last offseason, but now he's claiming he never actually wanted to leave Edmonton.
Holloway gave a new in-depth interview with the Cam and Strick Podcast detailing his offer sheet and the process of leaving the Oilers last season. The Alberta-born forward revealed that he truly wanted to stay in Edmonton.
Oilers fans not happy with Dylan Holloway's new comments on leaving Edmonton
Holloway revealed that he felt personally slighted by the Oilers' treatment of him in contract negotiations, which he took as the team having a lack of interest in signing him.
However, the Oilers were just trying to negotiate the salary down of a player who had only scored 18 points in the NHL at that point. Oilers fans have been quick to point out that Holloway was the one who signed an offer sheet to leave, and he fired his agent afterward.
The Oilers may have messed up by keeping Holloway in the minors longer than needed, and the signings of Jeff Skinner and Viktor Arvidsson didn't bode well for Holloway's playing time - but Edmonton still clearly had a place for him.
Had Holloway stayed in Edmonton, he likely would've beat out both Skinner and Arvidsson for playing time and could have scored even more alongside the Oilers' superstars.
Edmonton made a mistake to not match Holloway at $2.29M, but even that salary was rich for his NHL resume at the time. In no way would that be a personal slight from the Oilers to Holloway - but that's how he's taken it. Had he not signed the offer sheet, there'd be a good chance he would be in Edmonton last year.
