The Oilers have taken the ice for practice back in Edmonton before Game 3 of the playoffs, with Calvin Pickard slated to start in goal.
Stuart Skinner was pulled in Game 2 after allowing 11 goals in both games, and ranking last among NHL playoff goalies. The Oilers are betting on Pickard to be better.
Edmonton Oilers confirm lineup before Game 3 of playoffs
The immediate change that sticks out for the Oilers is Calvin Pickard in the starter's net.
The Oilers will also be keeping McDavid and Draisaitl together on the top line, but have heavily shaken up the lineup outside the first line.
Podkolzin and Arvidsson are back up from the fourth line to the second line with Nugent-Hopkins.
Evander Kane has been bumped down to the third line, and
Trent Frederic to the fourth.
On defence, some wild pairings are emerging.
John Klingberg and
Evan Bouchard together may be a fire drill in the defensive zone. We'll see if these pairings last at all.
The goaltending was a question mark heading into the playoffs, and now after just two games, they're turning to the 33 year old journeyman goalie in year 10 of
Connor McDavid.
However, the team has played great in front of Pickard this year. The hope with a goalie change will be to give the team a wake up call really, but Pickard did finish the year with a higher save percentage.
Tonight's game back in Edmonton will be critical in the series against the Los Angeles Kings. Going down 0-3 would be a near impossible task to crawl out of. Tonight is a must win game for the Oilers.
