The Edmonton Oilers secured a win over the New York Rangers last night, this time with stellar goaltending from Stuart Skinner.

Skinner desperately needed the bounce back game and surpassed expectation with a shutout win. Insiders reported Skinner was on the clock from management after a brutal Game 1 performance - so this turnaround is massive.

Oilers coach Knoblauch directly singles out one change made by Skinner in win over Rangers

Speaking to the media after the game, coach Knoblauch had some interesting comments about what Skinner improved on. The Oilers coach specifically mentioned Skinner's lateral movement.
He moved really well. He played a really strong game. Not easy saves. There was a lot of east-west lateral plays that he had to be quick on, and I thought he moved really well which allowed him to make those saves.

NHL analysts found last season that Stuart Skinner's lateral movement was among the slowest of all goaltenders in the league. Knobaluch directly commending Skinner's movement tonight is a good sign that weakness is being worked on.
Skinner was also challenged by a volume of high danger scoring chances, and held his own all night - especially in the final moments.
It was a stellar performance from Skinner at a time the Oilers really needed to quiet the conversation around goaltending. If he can keep this up, the Oilers can get off to a solid start to the season.
The shutout over the Rangers showed the highs Skinner can achieve with the Oilers. He doesn't need a shutout every night, but if he can maintain a level of consistency, he'll be staying in Edmonton.
