Alan Mitchell of the Athletic reported that a potential trade between the Calgary Flames and the Edmonton Oilers for defenseman Rasmus Andersson could end general manager Craig Conroy's career.
It's been noted that the Edmonton Oilers may be willing to tinker with their defensive pairings as the team continues to struggle with their blue line. Adding a player like Andersson who was a right-handed shot and holds a cap hit of 4.55 million AAV through this season and next could certainly ignite the Oilers as the team continues to stay in a win now mode.
Mitchell thinks that a trade of this magnitude could certainly have major consequences for Conroy which could lead to his dismissal or severely damaged his reputation as both teams are heated rivals and both teams face off against one another often.
«If it was purely a case of a hockey trade, Andersson would be the top name on this list. For Flames general manager Craig Conroy, trading Andersson to Edmonton could be a career-ending move. The provincial rivalry between Calgary and Edmonton is such that a Stanley Cup in Edmonton with contributions from Andersson could have severe impact on Conroy's reputation in the southern city.
The 28-year-old defenseman who stands at six foot one 202 lbs is entering the prime of his career and through eight games this year he has scored four goals with six assists for 10 points and as a + 6.
For Stan Bowman, the cost for such a trade could be quite high as the team would need to send quality talent and for picks or prospects to their rival which would make this trade unpalatable.
For Bowman, the price would be dear, more than any other team would have to pay. For Conroy, it's an easy no for a valuable player who is a perfect fit for the Oilers. No matter the offer.
Adding a player like Andersson to the Oilers with certainly improve the team immensely but it's quite unlikely that this move will happen due to the variety of reasons mentioned above.
Which means the Oilers will need to look elsewhere whether it's through the Bakersfield condors or looking at other teams throughout the NHL who are not provincial rivals who can give them the defenseman they need to help shore up their game and get the team back on track.
