The Edmonton Oilers are playing through a nightmare scenario without their top superstars available, and now it appears McDavid's return timeline has been pushed back.
McDavid suffered an injury after taking an uncalled cross check from Jets defenceman
Josh Morrissey. The timeline for McDavid's injury was initially listed as day to day, but it's now pushing three weeks.
According to an update from Elliotte Friedman on last night's edition of 32 Thoughts, the Oilers have targeted the middle of next week as their target for McDavid's return.
McDavid has skated, as he continues to do on their trip. Just going out there every day, he's been consistent about it.
The word is mid to late next week was the target. We'll see. The Oilers lost today, they're four points behind the Kings. Does that change the way they look at his return?
- Elliotte Friedman
The middle of this week would like up with previous reports that McDavid could return for April 9th at home against the St. Louis Blues. If his injury gets pushed back any further, it would only be until the weekend at the latest.
It's obviously positive news that McDavid will be fully healthy and back in the lineup with some time to ramp up before the playoffs. It's still shocking that McDavid has missed almost three weeks on what looked like a minor problem.
The Oilers are taking the right approach to be cautious and not rush him back, and they should stick to that approach - because they've already lost their best chance at home ice advantage.
The only priority for the Oilers now has to be resting their superstars and getting fully healthy before playoffs. Clicking come Game 1 may be a hard task with these injuries, but it's easier to do while healthy rather than playing through pain to start.
