NHL insider adds to reports linking Tristan Jarry to Edmonton Oilers
The Edmonton Oilers are looking for a significant goalie upgrade this offseason, and they could turn to Penguins starter Tristan Jarry as the solution.
The Oilers have been linked to Jarry previously this offseason, especially after the Penguins acquired Arturs Silovs in trade. Now, a new report from one NHL insider makes a trade much more likely.
Pittsburgh Penguins may be willing to retain salary on Tristan Jarry trade
According to a new update from NHL insider Jeff Marek, a Jarry trade for Pittsburgh would largely hinge on the need for salary retention in a deal.
Coming off a very poor season that saw Jarry sent to the AHL to find his game again, taking on his $5.375M salary for the next 3 years is a significant risk - and with his poor performance, Jarry may not be worth much.
Not only would the Oilers need Pittsburgh to retain salary on Jarry, but retaining would drive up the value of a trade for Pittsburgh. If they retained the maximum to get Jarry down to just $2.68M, then more contenting teams would be interested.
Jarry posted a brutal .893 save percentage in 36 games last season, but the 30 year old veteran had many seasons beforehand of being a much better goaltender.
The Oilers seem keen on bringing back Skinner and keeping him in their long-term plans, but it's clear now that they should have a secondary option to turn to in the playoffs if needed - and perhaps more of an invest than Pickard.
If the Oilers can get significant salary retention and believe in Jarry as a reclamation project, perhaps he could be a good trade fit for the Oilers.
