Oilers prospect Asher Barnett has been added to Team USA's preliminary roster for the World Juniors, a great sign for his development.

The Oilers don't have many high-end prospects that will crack the top Juniors teams, and it's still to be decided if Barnett will make the Final Cut - but the early recognition of his quality season is worthy of attention.

Oilers prospect Asher Barnett makes Team USA preliminary roster

Team USA announced their training camp rosters today, with Barnett getting the invite to compete with 9 other defenceman for a spot.
The Oilers traded for the pick and a elected the 18-year old Barnett in the 5th round of the 2025 Draft after playing just 21 games in the USHL the year prior. It seemed like a risky pick, but early returns have been great.
Barnett has since joined the Univeristy of Michigan in the Big 10, and has registered 8 points in 18 games from the blueline so far this season.
He's not even known for his offence, but instead for his overall cerebral play and skillsets that translate well for modern defenceman. Prospect experts have described him as excellent with close-out speed, puck retrievals and breakouts in his own zone, and his gap control. All of these are essential for quality NHL defenders.
Analysts at OilersNation believe Barnett has the tools to potentially become a bottom pair NHL defender.
I can see him working fine as a bottom pairing defenceman that will provide you with some penalty killing upside. Let's not forget they traded a future 2026 fifth-round pick to select the future Wolverine. They might see the same thing.
If the Oilers can get any NHL games out of a 5th round draft pick, it'll be a major compliment to their scouting staff. So far Barnett's progressing well, and making the Juniors team could be a major step for him.
