Insider report projects Oilers place in standings by 2030 season

Insider Paul Pidutti of Daily Faceoff in a recent 5-year study, projects the Oilers will have fallen out of contention by the year 2030, and are expected to be only the 13th-best NHL team.
Pudutti claims the main reason for the team's drastic decline is how the Oilers' front-office has structed player-contracts.

The Daily Faceoff host has Edmonton in the 2nd tier of his classification model, or 13 out of 32 teams, citing Leon Draisaitl's contract locks him in until 2032-33, and the expectation of Howard and Savoie to be main contributors by 2030.
Evan Bouchard is also secured by contract with the Oilers until 2029, enough time to raise uncertainty concerning his future status with the club. And RNH's deal expires at the end of 2028-29, at the age of 36.
Pudutti projects Connor McDavid will sign an extension that sees him with the team until at least 2030.
"McDavid is a near-certainty to be extended for at least a handful of seasons," Pidutti wrote. «With Zach Hyman (three more years), Nugent-Hopkins (four) and Darnell Nurse (five), the Oilers' main men are in place a while longer. Short term, expect more of the same a dangerous core and revolving cast of free agents, rentals, and buy-low candidates seeking to be Edmonton's elixir. If it hasn't happened by 2030, however, this will be a very old group clinging to the talent of McDavid (maybe?), Draisaitl, and Bouchard (maybe?). Think the 2020-22 Penguins.»
Pittsburgh, once a perennial contender, has not qualified for the playoffs in the last three years, a fate the Oilers would like to avoid.
