Insider names star goalie as trade target for Edmonton Oilers this offseason
Oilers insider Jim Matheson has reported that St. Louis Blues goalie Jordan Binnington may be a prime trade target for Edmonton this offseason.
The Oilers were connected to Binnington in trade rumours earlier this season after the 4 Nations Faceoff while the Blues pursued a retool.
Insider names Jordan Binnington as offseason trade target for Edmonton Oilers
Insider Jim Matheson confirmed that the Oilers will be pursuing a new goalie next year - given the fact they're making a change after Game 2 - and may target Jordan Binnington as a prime candidate.
Here's what may have to happen in summer: Oilers get younger version of
Jake Allen to be 1 and 1a with Skinner who is well-priced at $2.6m AAV or they go to St.Louis and offer Skinner in trade to partner young
Joel Hofer and try for Binnington as No 1 and keep Pickard as backup
Other than Binnington, acquiring a cheaper and young goalie to push Skinner for a tandem job would be the Oilers best path forward. However, given the instability in the crease, a proven veteran starter would be preferred.
The 31 year old Cup Champion Binnington fits the bill for the Oilers, but there's some real concerns about his recent performance. The Blues have struggled at times, but Binnington only put up a .900 save percentage this season - which is NHL average.
It may be tough to accommodate his $6M contract until the 2026-27 season, but at the end of the day, upgrading the goaltending is a necessity for the Oilers.
The fact that they're turning to the veteran journeyman backup Pickard in Game 3 is a damning statement on the condition of their goaltending. Next year, the Oilers should be running back a much more stable goalcrease.
