In a recent article, Oilers' forward David Tomasek spoke about his transition to North America from Europe, and the difference between both styles of hockey.

You don't get many opportunities, and you need to stay confident, stay patient, and kind of do almost everything right.

I'm still trying to play my game, but also learning how to be a good bottom-six guy. I think one day I'll be proud to do both, because it's not an easy thing.

- David Tomasek

Forward adapting to new role and style

Indeed, Tomasek is learning to be a role player in the NHL, instead of the skill-guy who drives offense, like when he played in the SHL.
Before signing a one-year deal in April, David played for Farjestad BK in the Swedish Hockey League, where in 2024-25 he won the scoring title with 24 goals and 57 points in 47 games.
Playing a checking-game in a bottom-6 role in Edmonton, and on a smaller ice surface, requires a different mind-set than the slower-paced European game.
Tomasek, however, is running out of time to figure it out. In 17 games, he has 2G and 2A and is a minus-7.
Yet, for a player to grow, he must be uncomfortable and learn on the fly. He didn't want to remain in Europe, where he'd had success, but wanted to grow as a hockey player in the best league in the world, and realize his dream.
«It was the last chance to come over, and I didn't want to have regrets once I'm done,» Tomasek told Daily Hive in an exclusive interview. «I decided to leave a comfortable life and experience the NHL, experience a good team, and I'm glad I did, even though it's been hard sometimes.»

That he made the Oilers' roster out of training camp says a lot about his abilities. Now, it's a matter of proving he belongs in the NHL.
