Former Oiler Sam Gagner makes personal announcement with Canadian team

Former Oilers fan favourite Sam Gagner made a valiant effort to continue his NHL career last year, but is now announcing his retirement and joining the Ottawa Senators front office.
Gagner departed the Oilers after his contract was not renewed last offseason, and joined the Ottawa Senators on a tryout contract. He never made the NHL team, but did play 19 AHL games.

At 35 years old, after 1043 career NHL games with 7 different teams, Gagner is officially hanging up the skates to pursue a career in the front office.
Oilers fans obviously know Gagner well as the journeyman had three different stints in Edmonton, and played his best hockey as an Oiler.
Gagner was selected 6th overall by the Oilers in the 2006 NHL Draft, and although he never reached the offensive totals expected of a high pick, he was a skilled player that loved the game and gave his all.
His most memorable night will surely be February 2, 2012, where Gagner recorded 8 points while a weak Oilers team dismantled a legendary Blackhawks team. It was an electric night for Oilers fans, and a personal high for Gagner.
Sam Gagner joins Ottawa Senators in executive role
Now joining the Ottawa Senators in player development, Gagner will be able to keep working in the game he loves, and pass down his experience and skills that the next generation of players. It's a very fitting role for him.
Oilers fans will wish Gagner the absolute best in the next chapter of his hockey career. He never won a Stanley Cup as a player, now he'll be trying as an executive.
