The Edmonton Oilers have a weaker prospect pool relative to the rest of the NHL after being in cup contention for a few years, but there's still a number of prospects shaping up to make the big leagues.

One prospect that was tagged as an emerging prospect on the NHL radar is goaltender Samuel Jonsson, who just won goalie of the year award in the Swedish second division league.

Five prospects identified by Oilers analyst as NHL players

Oilers analyst Allan Mitchell took a look at the team's prospects by ranking of NHLe, which ranks the equivalent scoring rate to the NHL from the given prospects' league. Three forwards catch the attention of Mitchell, as well as two defenders and one goalie.
The three forwards are the usually ranked top Oilers forward prospects: Maxim Berezkin, Matthew Savoie, and Sam O'Reilly. Each player currently has an NHLe of at least 30 - and all of them will continue to increase.
Berezkin's ranking of 42 is extremely encouraging, as the Oilers are expected to get him signed and into the lineup for next season. By this projection, it's not impossible that Berezkin could score 50 points for the Oilers next year.
Matthew Savoie and Sam O'Reilly are also doing great in their own right, with Savoie probably eying a roster spot on the team next season.
The two defenceman who met the threshold of at least 15 NHLe are Beau Akey and Albin Sundin. Akey is a more well known prospect for being a second round pick and in the OHL, but Sundin has also made waves in the Swedish second league this year too. He was drafted in the 6th round of 2024.
And of course, the player that may grab the most attention is the newly emerging goalie prospect Samuel Jonsson. Drafted by the Oilers in the 5th round of 2022, the 6'3 goalie put up an incredible .922 save percentage in 24 games this year.
The Oilers prospect system may not be as deep as other teams, but there are a few high end pieces for fans to look forward to.
