Evan Bouchard sees major decline in key category for his success
Evan Bouchard has been off to a rough start to the season, and is also seeing a decline in his shot totals.
Oilers analysts have been critical of Bouchard early this season due to a number of horrific turnovers, even though he still usually converts his plays and passes. However, one concerning sign would be him shooting less.
Evan Bouchard on pace for significantly less shots this season
According to NHL analysts, Evan Bouchard is shooting far less this season. Interestingly, that also includes significantly fewer shots below 90 miles per hour.
In recent years Bouchard has emerged as one of the top offensive defenceman in the NHL, with his patented «Bouch Bomb» shot as a major reason for his success.
Not only is Bouchard a great passer, he's been a solo offensive threat with 32 goals over the past 2 seasons.
Bouchard's shot gives the Oilers another threat on the powerplay, which draws away defenders from purely shadowing McDavid and Draisaitl. However, Oilers fans have noticed a decline in shooting on the powerplay as well.
It's curious that Bouchard is shooting less this season. Perhaps it could be an issue of pure confidence, as he has been taking flak from media frequently this year. So much criticism could lead to less confidence to make the skill plays he's known for.
The Oilers need Bouchard to be a high-end offensive threat to have their team reach their full potential. Hopefully Bouchard gets shooting more, get back to being an offensive threat himself, and can bring up his offence totals this year.
