Evan Bouchard reacts to offer sheet in offseason, NHL insider reveals terms of contract

The Edmonton Oilers were able to re-sign Evan Bouchard to a major contract extension this offseason, but not before he saw an offer sheet.
Reports surfaced in the offseason revealing that the Carolina Hurricanes did make a push to sign Bouchard to an offer sheet, and now new details have emerged.

According to a new update from Elliotte Friedman on the 32 Thoughts Blog, the Hurricanes presented Bouchard with a 1 year offer above McDavid's salary - but the Oilers defenceman said he only heard about it briefly.
Newly-signed Evan Bouchard on Carolina's offer-sheet threat that got his four-year, $42M extension done before July 1: «I didn't know a lot about it. I'm glad it worked out (here).» It's believed the Hurricanes put together a one-year deal at a number higher than McDavid just signed for, then figure out an extension. They turned their attention to K'Andre Miller, and worked out a trade with the Rangers.

Bouchard ended up signing for a lower salary than offered in Carolina, but didn't concede much of a discount for the Oilers. Signed for the next 4 years at $10.5M, Edmonton should still be thrilled to keep one of the premier puck-moving defenceman in the NHL.
Plenty of Oilers fans throw some pretty harsh criticism towards Bouchard for costly turnovers and poor defensive zone reads at times.
While that does occasionally happen, the value he brings to the team far outweighs any negative. Most importantly, he's consistently been a clutch playoff player, with 23 points in 22 games last year.
The Oilers are better to have Bouchard signed and on the team, and should be thankful he wasn't too interested by the offer sheet from Carolina.
