The NHL uses each player as direct comparables when negotiating player salaries, and with today's major contract extension for Jakob Chychrun, Evan Bouchard's asking price will be rising.
Bouchard has had a slightly down season this year after a fantastic season the year before, but his annual salary has still been projected to be upwards of $10M.
Jakob Chychrun contract will boost Evan Bouchard contract significantly
Jakob Chychrun has been re-signed by
the Washington Capitals on an eight year contract for $9M a season, which Evan Bouchard will soar past.
Chychrun is having a career season with the Capitals, currently at 18 goals and 43 points through 65 games. That's far below Evan Bouchard, and perhaps surprising that Chychrun was able to command that level of salary.
However, Chychrun has solidified himself as a key piece to a great Captials blue line and the salary cap rising allows the player to command more salary.
Evan Bouchard will soar past Jakob Chychrun contract value
In comparison, Evan Bouchard has had a much better career season of 82 points, and is even having a better year offensively with 55 points this year.
Bouchard's much higher offensive stats and incredible playoff success gives him even more reason to ask for a salary significantly higher than Chychrun.
Bowman knows he must squeeze in another superstar salary on the back end (somewhere in the $10-million range?) for Bouchard, which is partly why St. Louis's offer sheets for
Philip Broberg and
Dylan Holloway were successful.

Hopefully the Oilers will be able to get Bouchard signed long term to keep the talented puck moving defenceman as part of the team, preferably on the most team friendly contract possible.
