Edmonton Oilers sign leading Swedish scorer free agent, billed as NHL ready
The Edmonton Oilers have officially announced another European free agent signing, this time acquiring David Tomasek from the SHL.
The Oilers also announced the signing of German free agent Joshua Samanski this morning, and now have made a deal for Tomasek official as well.
Edmomton Oilers complete another free agent forward signing, more to come
According to an announcement from the Oilers this morning, Tomasek has come to terms on a one year contract for $1.2M beginning next season.
Tomasek is a 29 year old Czech right shot centreman who had an incredible season with Farjestads BK Karlstad in the SHL, scoring 57 points in the top Swedish league and leading the league in scoring.
Interestingly, the Czech forward began his hockey career in the OHL back in 2013, but has left to play the rest of his career in 6 different European leagues. Stan Bowman reportedly went to scout him personally during the 4 Nations Faceoff.
According to insider Bob Stauffer, it's very possible that Tomasek competes for a top nine spot in the lineup for next season upon his arrival. If he doesn't work out as an NHL player, sending him to the minors would bury almost all of his salary.
Prospect expert Scott Wheeler has hailed Tomasek as a quality two way contributor, a competitive player, and one of the most sought after European players this year.
Hopefully this slew of free agent signings from the Oilers can actually build up the team's depth and prospect pool adequately, and help build back their future prospects after losing some in years of cup contention.
