Oilers rookie Matt Savoie has shown some positive signs for his development by the eye test at times, but the stats reveal some major concerns.

Savoie has earned an extended run on the first line with Connor McDavid in the last few weeks, and has seen his ice time increase significantly over the month of November. He's got 2 points in his last 3 games, but there been not much else to show for it.

Stats suggest Oilers should demote Matthew Savoie off first line

The 21 year old rookie has shown some development of his 2-way game earlier on this season and even in limited penalty-kill roles, but overall, the numbers aren't good.
According to TopDownHockey's data, Savoie ranks as a 0% wins above replacement player.
There's some positive signs with his offensive play driving, but his poor defensive numbers and total lack of finishing are really dragging his numbers down. That's reflected in his all-important ice time with McDavid.
Playing with McDavid, Savoie has recorded a lower expected goals for percentage - and has seen his goals against per 60 skyrocket to above 4.
Seeing the positives that Savoie does bring on the ice, these numbers aren't fairly surprising. He does play with speed, has the ability to make skill plays, and as mentioned has shown development defensively.
Perhaps it's just when elevated to McDavid's line, Savoie is struggling with the quality of competition. He produced more even results without McDavid, albeit with far less offence.
Either way, these numbers should give the Oilers pause to perhaps reconsider Savoie's spot in the first line for now. Edmonton needs to win the minutes with McDavid on the ice to have success, and that doesn't appear to be happening at 5v5 with Savoie right now.
