Oilers forward Connor McDavid famously took a salary discount on his last contract, and insiders believe he'll be ready to do so again on his next deal.
Known to be the best player in the NHL by a wide margin, insiders believe Connor McDavid could command the maximum salary of $19.1M next season - but he won't be pursuing the highest payday.

According to a recent report from NHL insider David Pagnotta, McDavid is seeking just up to $17M on his next contract - another a discount from his full worth of a maximum salary deal.
In an interview last season, McDavid explicitly said he won't be seeking the highest possible salary on his first contract in his UFA years. His top priorities are an environment to contend for a Stanley Cup long-term, and the best place for his family.
He isn't too concerned about driving up salaries for his peers, either.

On his last contract, there was the famous story of McDavid calling Oilers GM Chiarelli at the last minute to take off $750,000 in salary to help the team.
In reality, McDavid wants a number that fairly pays him as the best player in the NHL, but not a salary so high that it hinders the team's ability to add more players.
The Oilers are incredibly fortunate to have Connor McDavid, and getting him locked up to another discount contract would be unreal.
