Edmonton Oilers superstar Connor McDavid is in the minority when it comes to a major rule change of changing overtime to a 10-minute session of three on three.

McDavid made his case in the early days of the Four Nations face off when the tournament decided to implement a 10-minute overtime to see how players and the game would fare.

Friedman reveals 10-minute overtime will be discussed at GM meetings

McDavid explained at the time that this style would be great for the fan experience and that most players would rather play overtime than a shootout.
I think it's a great kind of trial run. Something that I think maybe the players liked, I think the fans liked it, it felt a little bit more like it's in our hands. You know, I don't think anyone really wants it to go to a shootout. - Connor McDavid

During the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman along with Kyle Bukauskas revealed but the 10-minute overtime will be talked about at the next GM meetings later this year.
Friedman also believes that the majority of players would rather go a seven- or eight-minute overtime rather than 10 as the intensity of the period is far more taxing to the players then a five-on-five situation.
The line changes are quicker and there are many more open nice opportunities which leads to breakaways and high intensity breakouts.

NHL will look to other potential changes with 4 Nations experiments

Along with the 10-minute overtime, the NHL tried other changes including a shorter intermission and longer TV timeouts. It remains to be seen on whether these changes will be implemented into next season or be scrapped altogether.
The league is trying to make the fan experience even better as they make these changes along with the addition of the Four Nations faceoff tournament which was the first time best on best faced off against one another since 2016.
As Connor McDavid continues to become the ambassador and spokesman for the NHL in this generation of talent, the league will certainly listen and take notes whether these ideas are feasible or a nonstarter.
If any major changes were to occur, they would likely be added into the next collective bargaining agreement which is due to be negotiated at any time and will expire in 2026.
