In a recent social media post, depth-forward Mattias Janmark was mentioned as possible trade target from three NHL clubs.
Janmark is currently in year 2 of a 3-year, $1.45M deal, that includes a 10-team no trade list. He becomes a free agent on July 1, 2027.
In his four seasons with the Oilers, his production has consistently dropped, from 10G in his fist year, to only 2 last season, and has only scored 1G over 24 games this season.
Though he is not known for his offense, his defensive role has also been questionable, playing on a bottom-6 that has struggled to make any significant contributions.
His role on the team, in fact, has become even less certain due to cap constraints, players returning to the lineup from the IR, and prospects in the AHL that have earned a good, long look from the Oilers.
Given the interest in him from other teams, it would be prudent of Stan Bowman to move his $1.45M from the Oilers salary cap.
And should Mangiapane also be dealt, Edmonton would free-up just over $5M is cap space.
The benefits of having this money available at the trade-deadline cannot be overstated. As of this morning, the Oilers sit first in the Pacific Division,
The timing of Edmonton's success could not have come at a more opportune time also, as they seem poised to make a strong push for the playoffs.
With the trade-deadline approaching, GM Bowman will need as much cap-space that he can free-up to make the team even stronger.
The recent roster-activity is a clear indication that the Oilers have a plan, that is becoming clearer with each passing game.
Making cap money available is the first step in that process.
