With the Oilers' preseason roster looking more and more like a opening-day lineup, two players in particular appear to be slated for the waiver-wire, at last according to one analyst.

where does that put the off-season free-agent signee Lazar? Could he go on waivers? Who knows? Lazar's hole card is he can also play right-wing.

Free-agent signee Riley Stillman skated Tuesday after he was hurt in the split-squad exhibitions against Calgary 10 days ago. Stillman, who played on the Canes farm squad last year, is likely going on waivers - but he's veteran insurance with 163 NHL games.

Forward and defense depth likely to be placed on waivers

Forward Curtis Lazar signed as a free agent by Edmonton, July 2, 2025, after having played three season with the New Jersey Devils.
The Oilers have added several forwards recently, including Andrew Mangiapane and David Tomášek, along with Ike Howard and Max Jones. This increased depth may make Lazar, a bottom-6 forward, expendable.
Lazar is described as a solid depth player, defensively responsible, and a penalty killer. However, his offensive numbers have been limited in recent seasons, including a decline to 5 points in 48 games in 2024-25, down from 25 points in 71 games in 2023-24.
Riley Stillman's signing this offseason was described as a depth move, likely intended to bolster the Bakersfield Condors in the AHL. The Oilers' have a number of defensemen competing for NHL roster spots, including veterans like Troy Stecher and prospects like Alec Regula, making it difficult for Stillman to secure a consistent spot on the NHL roster.
Stillman signed as a free agent by Edmonton, July 1, 2025, largely as a depth defenseman, and has only played 163 NHL games in his 8 year professional career. If he clears waivers, he will play the season in the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors.
