Canucks issue a statement on coach Sergei Gonchar
The Canucks are wishing a happy birthday to their Defensive Development Coach, Sergei Gonchar, as the long time pro turned 49 on Saturday, April 13.
Gonchar joined the Canucks coaching staff along with Adam Foote when Rick Tocchet was hired as the team's head coach in January 2023, and they've helped to transform the Canucks defence into something formidable.
The Russian defenceman played 1,301 games in his NHL career, he won a cup with the Penguins in 2009 and scored 811 points over the course of his 20 year NHL career.
Gonchar joined the Penguins in a developmental coaching position shortly after the end of his career, but was dismissed in 2020 before joining Tocchet and the Canucks a few years later.
